Help the Aged launches reusable jute shopper following plastic bag ban in its charity shops

On 2nd June 2008, during National Recycling Week, Help the Aged will become the first charity shop retailer to ban plastic bags in its high street stores. To ensure that customers are not left inconvenienced by this move, the leading older people’s charity will be offering a stylish, reusable shopping bag made from sustainable jute material, as an alternative.

From June, the eye-catching shopping bag, featuring a bold and colourful design, will be available to buy for just £1.95 from any of the 365 Help the Aged shops throughout the UK. All profits from sales of the new bag will go towards the work the Charity undertakes to free disadvantaged older people from poverty isolation and neglect.

Helena Brett, Head of Trading and Development at Help the Aged said: “Our new bag-for-life not only enables fashion-conscious shoppers to do their bit for the environment, but will also help to raise much needed funds for the work we do for and on behalf of older people. Our charity shops exist as fantastic local recycling centres, as well as hidden treasure troves, so whether you’re looking for some vintage summer fashion, a page turner for your holiday, or have simply de-cluttered your home and need somewhere to off-load all your old things, come and find us on your high street!”

The Charity’s network of 365 Help the Aged shops raise funds to help disadvantaged older people by selling donated clothing, books, household textiles, goods and CDs. The shops also provide free information and advice leaflets on issues affecting older people, their families, carers and friends and actively support the Charity's national campaigns.
