Oil Recovery by Crown Oil Wins Environmental Award Recognition

A winner, Crown Oil, is celebrating the HazardEx Award for Environmental Contribution to Industry. Without any spillage, Crown Oil removed and recycled 6.4 million litres of gas oil from Derwent Power Station in a carefully managed operation needing over 200 tanker movements.

Mark Andrews, general manager, said, “Fuel and transport oils are our main business; we aim to be responsible and minimise our environmental impact in everything we do. This award is something that all the team can be very proud of.

Crown Oil is one of only a handful of companies in the UK with the technical, commercial and logistical skills to do oil recovery work on this scale. The Environmental Services Division schedules each recovery operation with care. Fuel transfers are monitored to prevent spillage. Tank residues are removed at the end of major pumping operations. The tanks are then either de-gassed and cleaned in preparation for future use or cut up and removed from site. Crown Oil’s dedicated laboratory analyses the recovered fuel and will recommend re-blending if necessary before re-sale to the market.

“Large industrial gas users, like power stations, face challenges following the termination of the interruptible gas tariff,” Mark explained. “Large stocks of reserve gas oil that are no longer needed will deteriorate with time to become an environmental hazard.”

Crown Oil has a number of environmental initiatives. They opened an environmentally friendly HQ just last year. The company carbon offset their own transport fleet so that all deliveries to site are carbon free. Additionally, users such as builders and plant operators who use red diesel have an option to totally carbon offset their fuel. Crown Oil also has a high grade bio-fuel derived from 100 percent sustainable sources that is ideal for use in combined heat and power (CHP) plant. This enables users to collect maximum renewable obligation certificates (ROCs) to offset against other carbon producing activity.

Environmental Award Nomination for 'Flawless' Oil Recovery Operation by Crown Oil

Crown Oil has been nominated for an environmental award following a successful operation to remove and recycle 6.4 million litres of gas oil at Derwent Power Station. The nomination in the Environmental Contribution to Industry category at HazardEx magazine recognises that Crown Oil’s environmental services division completed the complex operation, requiring over 200 tanker movements, without spilling a single drop of oil.

Crown Oil is one of only a few UK companies with the technical resources to undertake this scale of oil recovery. The company carefully analyse and assess fuel recovered from industry and re-blend if necessary before it is sold on to the market. The scope of work includes not just oil recovery, but the complete cleaning and degassing of tanks. These may be left in-situ for future use or removed from site.

The Derwent contract was just one of several undertaken by Crown Oil UK. The company successfully completed a similar project to recover 25 million litres of fuel at Medway Power Station in Kent in 2010 and are in active negotiations for further work.

“Following changes to the interruptible gas tariff, many power stations and industrial users face a dilemma. Large stocks of reserve gas oil, that is no longer needed, will only deteriorate with time to potentially become an environmental hazard.” explained Crown Oil’s general manager Mark Andrews. “We can help them with safe waste oil removal and the decommissioning of tanks, overcoming environmental problems and also releasing working capital.”

Crown Oil takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. The company fuel delivery tanker fleet is carbon offset so that all fuel delivery mileage is carbon free. For off road use, the company offer red diesel users an option to use a totally carbon offset fuel. To enable combined heat and power (CHP) plant operators to collect maximum renewable obligation certificates (ROC’s) Crown Oil have a high grade bio-fuel made from 100 per cent sustainable sources. This enables users to trade these certificates or use them to offset against their other carbon producing activity.

HazardEx is the leading journal covering industries such as oil and gas, exploration, production and processing where explosive hazards may be present. Award winners will be revealed at a gala dinner in Harrogate on February 29.

Gas Oil Removed From Power Station With Full Environmental Safeguards

National fuel distributor, Crown Oil, has removed 6.4 million litres of surplus gas oil at Derwent Power Station in Derby. The four month operation has released a substantial sum for the generator and required 200 tanker movements. The closely controlled operation was completed without a single spillage.

Mark Andrews, Crown Oil’s general manager explained, “There are many power stations and industrial operation facing similar problems with bulk back-up fuel that is no longer needed. This fuel is a potential environmental threat and will only degrade over time. Fortunately, we can remove this material and so release working capital for our client.”

A major fuel oil distributor that has its own environmental services operation, Crown Oil is one of only a handful of companies in the UK with the technical, commercial and distribution resources for this work. Before removal, samples of fuel are carefully analysed to assess condition. Should it be necessary recovered fuel is re-blended and appropriately graded before it is sold on to the market.

Crown Oil offered a better return to the client and demonstrated a capability to do the work without environmental impact. The company also has a track record, having successfully completed a similar project last year to recover 25 million litres of fuel at Medway Power Station in Kent.

Preparations are now in hand for the final environmental work. This will involve the removal and safe disposal of oil residues, draining of pipework, cleaning of tanks and degassing so that they are safe and ready to be re-used at any time in the future should the need arise.

Crown Oil can offer a national fuel recovery service to any power station or industrial site. As a major oil distributor, with substantial technical resources and market knowledge, the company is uniquely placed to provide an integrated and competitive service.
