Rewilding Britain Passes £1 Million Milestone as Nature Recovery Projects Gather Pace

Britain’s rewilding movement has just hit a major milestone, and it’s brilliant news for wildlife, coastal communities and the fight against climate change.

Rewilding Britain has now awarded more than £1 million in grants through its Rewilding Innovation Fund, helping ambitious projects across the country bring landscapes, coastlines and marine habitats back to life.

And the latest round of funding shows one thing loud and clear: working with nature is rapidly becoming one of Britain’s best defences against climate change.

From the shores of North Wales to the windswept islands of Orkney, communities are embracing rewilding not as a luxury, but as a practical solution to rising sea levels, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss.

Wales Looks Beneath the Waves

One of the standout projects is the Menai-Connecting Coasts initiative in North Wales, led by the Zoological Society of London and Bangor University.

The project aims to restore marine habitats across the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay, with a particular focus on reviving native oyster reefs.

That may sound niche, but oysters are environmental superheroes. Healthy oyster reefs can improve water quality, boost biodiversity and create thriving underwater habitats for marine life. They can even support local fishing and tourism economies.

The project will now explore where oyster recovery could successfully take place across North Wales, laying the foundations for large-scale marine restoration.

Orkney Fights Back Against Coastal Erosion

Meanwhile, in the Orkney Isles, the Growing Sanday Land & Sea project is tackling one of the biggest threats facing island communities: coastal erosion.

Parts of Sanday sit only a few metres above sea level, and some dunes have already retreated by an astonishing 37 metres.

Instead of relying purely on expensive man-made defences, the community is turning to nature itself.

The project plans to restore kelp forests, dunes and saltmarshes to create natural coastal protection systems capable of helping shield the island from storms and erosion.

It’s a powerful example of how rewilding is no longer just about “letting nature grow wild” — it’s increasingly about helping communities survive and thrive in a changing climate.

More Than Just Wildlife

Other projects receiving funding include river restoration work along Dorset’s River Char to reduce flooding and boost biodiversity, alongside habitat recovery efforts in the Cairngorms National Park, where degraded peatlands, woodlands and freshwater systems are being revived.

And that’s the key point here: rewilding benefits people as well as nature.

Healthier ecosystems can reduce flooding, store carbon, support wildlife, improve water quality and create greener local economies. In many cases, restoring nature is proving cheaper, and far more sustainable, than constantly battling environmental damage after it happens.

Rebecca Wrigley, CEO of Rewilding Britain, said the growing demand for funding reflects the rapid rise of rewilding projects across the country, with communities increasingly choosing long-term nature-based solutions over short-term fixes.

A Wilder Future?

Rewilding Britain wants to see at least 30% of Britain’s land and seas rewilded by 2030, an ambitious target, but one that feels increasingly achievable as projects like these gain momentum.

And perhaps most encouraging of all is the fact that many of these schemes are community-led. From Welsh coastlines to Scottish islands, ordinary people are helping shape a greener, wilder and more resilient future.

Nature, it seems, may finally be getting a fighting chance.

Rooftop solar could cut global warming and provide 65% of the world’s electricity, new study finds

Covering the whole world’s rooftops with solar panels could provide the majority of global electricity, and even lower temperatures by 0.13 degrees according to some recent research by the University of Sussex.

Rooftops cover approximately 286,000 km² of the world, an area similar in size to Italy or New Zealand. If every suitable roof was used, the study found photovoltaic solar (rooftop PV) could generate 19,500 TWh of electricity per year.

This would cover 65% of current global consumption and almost completely replace fossil fuel-based electricity, if coupled with load shifting and battery-electric storage.

The researchers used climate modelling techniques to simulate the impact of widespread solar deployment by 2050.

When it comes to global warming 0.13 degrees Celsius is a significant fraction. A 2023 Nature study estimated that for every 0.1 degree of warming above current levels, another 140 million people will be exposed to dangerous heat levels.

Urging policymakers to prioritise this technology, the researchers argue that solar power offers taxpayers better value for money than nuclear. University of Sussex climate and policy researcher Prof Felix Creutzig said: “Solar is now outcompeting nuclear power in cost, deployment speed and environmental risks.

"Given its immediate carbon reduction benefits governments should consider shifting incentives toward rooftop PV instead of nuclear. This goes for cooler countries like the UK as well as those with more obvious solar potential.”

Solar power costs have declined dramatically over the past decade. Data from the International Renewable Energy Agency suggests the levelised cost of electricity for solar is now in the range of £30 to £50 per MWh, while new nuclear projects such as Small Modular Reactors are estimated at between £100 and £150 per MWh.

Dr Creutzig adds: “Beyond carbon savings, reducing fossil fuel dependence also means cleaner air and better energy security. With so much untapped potential in solar it’s hard to see how governments can justify investing in nuclear, or as yet unproven carbon capture projects.”

Today’s paper advocates for global cooperation to deploy solar panels where they can be most powerfully used.

Despite being the continent with the world’s highest solar energy resources, Africa accounts for only 1% of rooftop PV installations, highlighting the need for investment. High carbon intensity and large building stocks mean that East Asia has the highest potential in rooftop PV for climate change mitigation. Meanwhile, North America and Europe, despite lower solar intensity, have a high combined installation potential of over 4,300 GW or 25% of global capacity based on their high building stock.

Would you like to live in an eco-friendly ModPod?

My wife pointed out the following story about Modpod living:-

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12868241/sold-two-bed-semi-detached-house-prefabricated-pod-cheaper-bills.html

There are pros and cons. For example although designed for the elderly some switches are positioned in such a way that many people can't reach them.

The rent is £500 a month, but bills are lower, although there's no room for a tumble-drier.

A spokesperson for ModPods said: "ModPods International Ltd’ have started to establish  a show village at their new Coventry Manufacturing Hub to offer potential buyers the opportunity to indulge in the quality of the ModPod experience.

"Three of the 5 spacious quality manufactured housing pods (from a single storey single occupant -Mini-Modpod through to the popular two bedroom four person Pod) have been built. ModPod Internationals Pipeline is growing fast as the Public and Private sector embrace Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), which has led to ModPods International having to source a new factory that will increase productivity to up to 1200 homes a year."

Why now is right for trying Lift-sharing

This summer was a record-breaking one for new Liftshare members, with over 23,000 joining the lift-sharing platform during the two months of July and August.

More people than ever before are giving lift-sharing a go, according to figures from Liftshare. This summer was a record-breaking one for new Liftshare members, with over 23,000 joining the lift-sharing platform across July and August. That’s four times the amount of the same period last year, due to Liftshare’s recent collaboration with Esso.

As a social enterprise, Liftshare (which this year celebrates its Silver Jubilee) offers its journey-matching service completely free to members of the public, predominantly across the UK and Ireland. With the recent spike in members and journeys added, now's an excellent time to find someone going your way.

National Liftshare Week is also coming up soon, 18-24th September, traditionally a time when more people get involved in sharing lifts and taking cars off the road.

During last year's Liftshare Week, Liftshare saw three times the usual number of sharers, and savings of £393,343, over 1.3 million miles and almost 300 tonnes of CO2, too.

Liftshare community manager Amy Young says “The boost in Liftshare members is thanks to our recent work with Esso, encouraging more people to Liftshare for their commutes and to events this summer. Esso awarded new and existing Liftshare members with bonus Nectar points and promoted the initiative with an advertising campaign. Liftshare turned 25 years old this August and this bumper summer for members has given us further reason to celebrate.”

Amy Young went on to say: “We identified through the Commuter Census that incentives play a key factor in encouraging people to choose a more sustainable mode of transport. People are keen to do their bit for the environment but only if it’s also affordable, and lift-sharing covers both bases.”

All Liftshare members, including new sign-ups, can claim 500 Nectar points on their next purchase at participating Esso service stations, fuel or shop, up until 4th October.

Liftshare's teamed up with Esso on their Thoughtful Driving Initiative, which provides help on how to fill up with less impact, drive more economically and make one less car journey. As part of the initiative, Esso is helping increase Liftshare’s exposure to get more people sharing.

Amy Young concluded: “This isn’t a one-off campaign, we’ll be working closely with Esso on more projects to raise Liftshare’s profile and bring extra benefits to members. Plus, as part of National Liftshare week 2023, Liftshare is also running a member competition.

"We’re giving away £100 Love2shop vouchers each for 5 lucky members between 11th to 30th September. To be entered, all they need to do is add or update their Liftshare journey.”

Call to give councils £100 million investment fund to build homes for locals in tourist hotspots

The Government should give councils direct long-term funding and planning powers to build affordable homes for local people currently priced out of the housing market in tourism hotspots, a new report from Localis argues.

In a report published today entitled ‘Brightness on the edge of town: how Community Land Trusts can deliver affordable housing’ Localis calls on the government to create a ten-year £100m Community Land Trust (CLT) investment fund to deliver more social rent homes in rural areas overwhelmed by an explosion of second homes and short-term-lets through platforms such as Airbnb.

Funding for Community Land Trusts and other forms of community housing has been discontinued since the abolition of the Community Housing Fund, and the lack of a suitable replacement imperils efforts of communities to come together and provide affordable housing for the benefit of local people.

Otherwise, the think tank warns, there'll be nowhere to house those who work to maintain the rural tourism sector, which provides 15% of rural jobs, or provide accommodation to local people without the higher salaries or resources of incomers.

In the study Localis also recommends that future planning reforms should redefine affordable housing, putting it on an income-focused approach that would allow councils to locally set the income for affordable housing in their area, based on economic and social circumstances.

The author of the report, Localis researcher, Sandy Forsyth, said: “While there's much positive work being done to guard rural communities against the negative impacts of over-tourism and the highly pressured housing market in England and Wales, much more is needed to be done.

“With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis more people than ever are in need of genuinely affordable options for housing. Community Land Trusts can provide enhanced community engagement in areas which are becoming increasingly diluted by massive tourist populations, supplying a more holistic, social benefit through the enactment of democratic decision-making and community ownership.”

Localis head of research, Joe Fyans, added: “The current definition of affordable housing doesn't  deliver for rural communities, especially in areas of high tourist activity.

“It's really vital future planning reforms redefine affordable housing, moving to an income-focused approach where councils have the ability to influence the income level defines affordable housing in their area, based on local circumstances.”

Councillor Kevin Bentley, who is the Chairman of the Local Government Association’s People and Places Board, said: “Affordable homes for local people are vital if we're to build on and maintain our vital tourism industry, particularly in rural areas where housing is even more at a premium.

“Giving councils greater freedoms and flexibilities to be able to build these homes, backed by adequate resources, as this report recommends, would revitalise communities in our most popular tourist destinations whilst also safeguarding local jobs and services.”

Tom Chance, the CEO of the Community Land Trust Network, said: “Over one hundred communities are trying to build more affordable homes in tourist hotspots, and many are succeeding.

“Homes that are designed and owned locally, and truly affordable to local people, today and forever. This report shows how the government and councils could give Community Land Trusts a shot in the arm to counteract the risk of second home blight."

(EDITOR: Obviously any new homes would need to be eco-friendly, have solar panels fitted, have ec0-aware heating, insulation, etc.)

EU Launches new Eco-Innovation Action Plan - helping businesses to deliver green growth and environmental benefits

Eco-innovation is crucial to delivering the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The new [Eco-InnovationActionPlan(EcoAP)ǀhttp://ec.europa.eu/environment/etap/index_en.html] will boost innovation that reduces pressure on the environment, and bridge the gap between innovation and the market. Eco-friendly technologies are good for business and help create new jobs, so eco-innovation is crucial to the economic competitiveness of Europe.

The EcoAP is one of the commitments of the Innovation Union Flagship Initiative, building on the 2004 [Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP)ǀhttp://ec.europa.eu/environment/etap/files/com_2004_etap_en....] It expands the focus from green technologies to the broader concept of eco-innovation, targeting specific bottlenecks, challenges and opportunities for achieving environmental objectives through innovation.

The EcoAP includes actions both on the demand and supply side, on research and industry and on policy and financial instruments. The Plan recognizes the key role of environmental regulation as a driver of eco-innovation and foresees a review of environmental legislation. It also stresses the importance of research and innovation to produce more innovative technologies and bring them to the market. The Plan also puts emphasis on the international aspect of eco-innovation, and on better coordination of policies with international partners.

Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik said: "The innovation challenge for this Century will be making our resources go further - doing more with less – and reducing the impact of our activities. Europe must be in the lead in meeting that challenge if we want to be competitive in a world of increasing resource constraints. Worldwide demand for environmental technologies, products and services is growing rapidly even in these difficult times, and it's an area where Europe has much to offer. This is a plan for green jobs and green growth."

The Action Plan will accelerate eco-innovation across all sectors of the economy with well targeted actions. To help create stronger and more stable market demand for eco-innovation, it will take measures in the areas of regulatory incentives, private and public procurement and standards and it will mobilise support for Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to improve investment readiness and networking opportunities.

Key aspects of the new Action Plan include:

1. Using environmental policy and legislation to promote eco-innovation;
2. Supporting demonstration projects and partnering to bring promising, smart and ambitious operational technologies to market;
3. Developing new standards to boost eco-innovation;
4. Mobilising financial instruments and support services for SMEs;
5. Promoting international co-operation;
6. Supporting the development of emerging skills and jobs and related training programmes to match labour market needs; and
7. Promoting eco-innovation through European Innovation Partnerships

Next Steps

Implementation of the plan will be via partnership between stakeholders, private and public sector, and the Commission. The upcoming mid-term financial review will provide a good opportunity to assess the achievement of the goals set in this Action Plan. New efforts will focus on product development and demonstration activities to fill the gap between technology and market uptake.

Background

Eco-Innovation is any form of innovation resulting in or aiming at significant and demonstrable progress towards the goal of sustainable development, through reducing impacts on the environment, enhancing resilience to environmental pressures, or achieving a more efficient and responsible use of natural resources.

European eco-industries are a significant economic sector with an annual turnover estimated at EUR 319 billion, or about 2.5 % of EU GDP.

As biodegradable nappies gain in popularity, so does home composting

As we all strive to be eco-friendly and reduce our carbon footprint, many parents are turning to biodegradable nappies as part of that strategy and to reduce the burden on landfill – and as such home composting has also become a popular practice. Home composting can seem like a major step or a daunting prospect for busy people, but it’s actually quite easy to get started and get into the habit, says gNappies – inventor of the hybrid nappy.

Home composting not only reduces landfill waste, but provides great benefit in the way of nutrients the soil will love. Research shows that almost half of home food waste could be composted, and in doing this, in just one year, save global warming gases equivalent to the CO₂ emissions a kettle produces annually or a washing machine in three months.

gNappies gives parents the option to choose between disposable nappies or cloth nappies – with the disposable element being a gRefill – an insert which is home compostable or can be disposed of in the domestic waste. In landfill, the gRefill only takes 50 – 100 days to biodegrade, compared with 500 years for a single disposable nappy. However, nothing totally biodegrades in landfill, so there are many benefits to home composting them.

Says Kim Graham-Nye, co-founder of gNappies, “Environmental issues are something that are a consideration for most people these days – and although it’s not always entirely convenient, actually once you incorporate eco-friendly habits into your everyday life it just gets easier and quickly becomes part of the normal routine. Our eco-friendly nappies help parents who want to be considerate to the environment to do so in a more convenient way, with the use of the gRefill. Home composting them is great for the environment and the soil – as the components used in the gRefill are absorbed back into the eco-system in a neutral or beneficial way.”

Parents may have been reluctant to try a non-disposable due to the perceived downtime, but changing nappies is easy with gNappies as it offers the two different options.

Kim and her husband Jason introduced the hybrid nappy concept after discovering shocking facts about disposable nappies and their impact on the environment. Around 11 million disposable nappies enter UK landfill every day, each taking up to 500 years to decompose and accounting for a third of the world’s landfill.

In addition to helping protect the environment, the gNappies range is stylish – the nappy ‘pants’ come in a range of colours, patterns and sizes. The dedicated gNappies UK website - www.gnappies.co.uk - features all the products as well as gBundle starter packs.

Trade Skills 4U.co.uk, the UK's largest independent electrical & renewable energy training provider, have launched a brand new ecommerce website selling Solar PV Tools. The website, www.solarpvtools.co.uk, is designed to equip renewable energy installers with all the tools they would need to install, test and maintain solar PV systems.

Trade Skills 4U.co.uk Managing Director, Carl Bennett says: “We have always taken customer care very seriously, talking and listening to our customers and taking their views on board. We only recommend tools based on our own practical hands on testing; tools must be fairly easy to use and survive the rigours of daily practice to become a tool we trust, in order for us to feel able to sell them to our customers.

"Having found difficultly sourcing solar PV kits ourselves, it seems there is space for a market leader to supply solar installers with the kit necessary to complete installations and comply with MCS accreditation standards.”

In June this year, Trade Skills 4U successfully launched their Renewable energy training centre, complete with purpose built facilities built to cater for the demand for renewable energy installers. The centre houses the UK’s first and only single storey training roof that enables candidates to install solar PV at height and with all the necessary kit they would require on a real installation such as pulleys, ginn wheels etc.

“We are in great support of this growing industry and have invested £350,000 into building our dedicated renewable energy centre; it seems like a step in the right direction to enable candidates to buy the kit we trust whilst they train with us. We are continually innovating and improving our products and services. The new website is the natural next step," added Carl Bennett.

Joe Bennett, Sales Manager of the new site added: "We are in a competitive market. Customers rightly expect a good deal and a professional service. At Solar PV Tools we know that our products are not only the very best available but also that we listen to our customers and construct the kits they need for the job. We provide fully bespoke solar PV tool kits which installers and contractors can design for themselves based on need and continue to refine our products and services to meet their needs now and in the future."

The International Green Awards™ 2011 are a welcome recognition of the diverse forms of innovation required to create genuinely green economics”, commented Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director, European Environment Agency.

Unique ‘Mu By Peugeot’ Hire Scheme Extends Availability At Bridgestone Eco-Rally

The pioneering ‘Mu by Peugeot’ hire scheme that includes renting bicycles, scooters, cars, Coupé Cabriolets, Sports Coupés, Crossovers, MPVs and vans, is now moving from pilot status to a progressively wider audience at more Peugeot Dealerships in the UK.

The cascade also includes the latest electric bicycles and iOn cars from the extensive Peugeot portfolio – which means it's now possible to experience the virtues of an electric vehicle on demand and in circumstances that suit the customer, and with the iOn at £30 for a half day loan.

At this weekend’s Bridgestone eco-rally (www.eco-rally.org) which runs on Sunday between Oxford and The Mall in London, Peugeot has four low CO2, highly-economical vehicles taking part – the 100% electric iOn, a compact Bipper van in Royal Mail livery, a 308 CC (Coupé Cabriolet) and 508 Saloon – both equipped with the latest Stop & Start System technology, and all available to hire with the ‘Mu by Peugeot’ rental scheme – viewable at www.mu.peugeot.co.uk.

Mu by Peugeot was launched into the UK as a pilot in 2010, in the same year that the Peugeot brand celebrated its 200th anniversary, promoting the fact that no other producer has such a wide portfolio of choice with personal mobility vehicles.

The pilot, based at Peugeot Dealerships in Chiswick, London and Temple Gate, Bristol, follows similar schemes started in France (initially in Brest, Lyons, Nantes and Rennes, and then throughout Paris), followed in Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Spain, and has been deemed a success. It now goes into phase III, where in the UK a number of dealerships take on ‘Mu by Peugeot’ to enhance the rental experience.

Water-powered buses for Wales

From this June, visitors to the spectacular Brecon Beacons will be able to enjoy using a truly innovative and green mode. Please to welcome Boris and Blodwen - the eco-friendly low-carbon-footprint b-bugs!

The Brecon Beacons, is one of the UK's finest National Parks. Wide-open spaces, and miles and miles of footpaths, make it an ideal location for anyone interested in walking, horse riding, or mountain biking. An ideal destination for a green holiday, in fact!

As we say, there’s another (greener) mode of transport available to anyone who spends a few nights in The Brecon Beacons. The b-bugs are powered by locally sourced electricity, generated by the Talybont-on-Usk micro hydro scheme, powered by Welsh rain.

Best of all, from June until October, the b-bugs can be delivered to your accommodation and used on Brecon Beacons’ highways and byways by anyone in possession of a fully comprehensive car insurance policy.

One of 4 winners at the Green Dragons’ Den Sustainable Development Challenge which ran at the 2010 Hay Festival, the project was awarded £10,000 by the Welsh Assembly Government in order to design and build the two trial buggies.

Just imagine… waking up in a self-catering cottage in some of the wildest, most remote countryside in Britain, and then going to collect your newspaper in an electric vehicle capable of a top speed of 30mph?

Or driving through the country lanes and market towns of The Brecon Beacons before plugging in for a quick re-charge at one of the friendly b-bug charge points whilst you enjoy a pub lunch, shopping or a walk.

It's as easy as driving a go-kart. There are only two pedals to bother with, accelerator and brake – it takes just a couple of minutes of instructions, and then five minutes of driving along the quiet Brecon Beacons’ roads to “catch the bug”.

Full details can be found at www.b-bug.com.
